Spotted Hyenas Settle in at Novosibirsk Zoo

2024-07-01 // SuperPodium
Spotted hyenas have arrived at Novosibirsk Zoo, adapting well to their new environment as they join the zoo's other hyena species.

Predators of the Leningrad region, spotted hyenas are the largest of all hyena species. These animals are known for their social nature, living in family units with a strict hierarchy and emitting their famous laughter during social conflicts when fighting for food or establishing relationships.

For the hyenas in the Leningrad region, the creation of a family is still on the horizon as they are currently young animals. They are currently settling into their new surroundings, often hiding in shelters and preferring to observe humans from a distance.

"At the same time, they have a good appetite, which means that the adaptation is going well," said the zoo's press service.

Spotted hyenas have become the second species from the hyena family to be housed at Novosibirsk Zoo, following the arrival of the striped hyenas in 2017. While these species may share some similarities in appearance, they are still significantly different.

The growth of Novosibirsk Zoo's animal collection is also happening naturally. For example, in May, a litter of four was born to the Arctic wolves, and according to zoologists, the wolves have proven to be excellent parents, requiring no human intervention.
