A new standard for school uniforms in Russia may be approved as early as next month, according to Anton Shalaev, the head of Rosstandart. The updated standard will introduce new requirements for the uniforms, including improved air permeability, moisture absorption, and durability. The document, developed by Roskachestvo, is currently undergoing final reviews and is expected to be approved in September.
The GOST standard will apply to both everyday and formal uniforms for students in primary, middle, and high schools. However, it will not cover footwear or sports clothing. The uniforms should be in a business style and should only include school symbols. The standard aims to ensure that students can comfortably wear the uniforms for at least eight hours, without feeling restricted or uncomfortable. The requirements for the uniforms will be basic, but manufacturers can choose to meet higher standards for better quality.
The GOST standard is not intended for control purposes but rather to provide consumers with clear guidelines for choosing high-quality uniforms. It will serve as a marker of quality, guaranteeing that the uniforms meet safety, comfort, and durability standards. Earlier this year, Roskachestvo found that only three out of nine tested boys' school trousers met the requirements of the draft GOST standard. However, manufacturers have already been producing uniforms that meet different GOST standards for various types of clothing.
According to Oleg Pavlov, the head of the Public Consumer Initiative, there are serious problems in the production and sale of school uniforms in Russia. Producers are cutting costs at the expense of quality and safety. The GOST standard will help address these issues and ensure that parents can trust the uniforms they buy for their children. The standard will also make it easier for consumers to make informed choices and avoid low-quality products.
